3. VFI-UPS, old: On-line UPS, or also: Continuous converter/double converter
(double-conversion) UPS
Functional description:
On-line UPSs continuously supply the connected
equipment (PC/server) with converted
voltage. The voltage is converted
from AC to DC, which is also used to charge
the batteries, and back again. In normal
mode (even in the event of mains malfunctions),
this ensures that the equipment has
a constant supply, and for this reason, online
UPSs are also known as continuous converters.
In the event of a UPS overload or
malfunction only, the equipment is linked
directly to the mains via the “by-pass”.
