person sinks in a well, he is soiled
with dust and dirty water. But
when at the proper depth he gets
clean water, he becomes cleaner with
the help of that water. Similarly
when a person learns corrupt words
he accrues great demerit. However,
with the knowledge of correct words,
he is not only free from the earlier
demerit but also adds to the stock
of his merits, cp. M. Bh. Paspasa-
hnika, vart. 9.
