My sincere gratitude goes also to the Graduate School of the University of Notre
Dame, which provided me with a generous Language Training Grant when I was first
learning German, and which also enabled me to study in Halle, Germany for a term under
a Zahm Travel Grant. I must also thank the Institute for the Liberal Arts at Notre Dame,
which awarded me a Graduate Student Research Award that also supported me for my
studies in Halle.
I am very thankful for having been able to engage in crucial research at the
Adorno Archiv in Frankfurt and Berlin with the generous support of the Deutsche
Akademischer Austauschdienst (DAAD). I want to thank especially Christoph Menke at
the Goethe Universität in Frankfurt for discussing my dissertation project and providing
insightful commentary, as well as Axel Honneth for his invaluable comments on central
chapters of the dissertation, especially regarding the relation between Adorno and Freud.
I am also deeply thankful to Shiloh Whitney, a dear friend and brilliant
philosopher, whose emotional support and intellectually stimulating conversations never
fail to rekindle my love for philosophy in times of crisis. And, last but not least, I am
thankful to Carlo for his loving support through the years, for his unwavering belief that a
better world is possible, for our endless conversations about politics and philosophy, and
for the many more conversations that await us in the future.
