As for the Philology of them, that is but a Circle of<br />

Tales.<br />

In French, "a Circle of Tales " is<br />

rendered by " un<br />

cercle d'amibuguitez " (a circle of ambiguities).<br />

In Latin, however, the words in question<br />

run thus :<br />

Quatenus vero ad Philologiam, quae in hoc Argumento, ut<br />

plurimum, versatur, nihil aliud est, quam Narratiuncularum &<br />

Observationum futilium congeries quaedam.<br />

And even those are rhymed verses :<br />

Quatenus ver' ad Philologiaw,<br />

qu' in hoc Argument', ut plurimum<br />

versatur, nil aliud est, quam<br />

Narratiuncular' et Observatiow<br />

futiliww congeries<br />

Lines one, three and five are rhymed,<br />

as also are<br />

lines two and four.<br />

And in the very first Essay, that Essay which, as we<br />

saw, is a song in praise of dramatic art, we are told<br />

where to look for that " Circle of Tales, ambuguitez<br />

and Narratiunculae." It all<br />

required this to enable us<br />

thoroughly to grasp the spirit of wit and humour<br />

embodied in the opening sentences of the Book.<br />

The word " Giddy " it is, which acts as a connectinglink<br />

between the commencement and the conclusion of<br />

the Book. At the end, it occurs as an adjective,<br />

" Giddy," at the beginning, as a noun, "Giddinesse,"
