Thou stand'st as if a mystery<br />

thou didst !<br />

SUCH were the words with which Ben Jonson wel<br />

comed the genius of Bacon's house, when celebrating<br />

the sixtieth anniversary of Bacon's birth, who then, in<br />

1621, had risen to the height of his fame as Chancellor,<br />

the king having bestowed upon him the title of<br />

Viscount St. Albans.<br />

And it is true, indeed, something of the mysterious<br />

attached to whatever Bacon wrote, to whatever his<br />

contemporaries wrote about him.<br />

Thus, for instance, in a note-book destined only for<br />

his own private use, his secretary, William Rawley,<br />

begins a number of sayings and anecdotes, having<br />

reference to his master, Bacon, in the<br />
