for we must remember that three hundred<br />

years ago, syllables and words rhymed, the sound of<br />

which has now become changed. In those days the<br />

word " how " was not pronounced as it is now, but<br />

more like an " O." The same may be said of the<br />

accentuation of words. In one of the old popular<br />

ballads which Ophelia sings in Hamlet, we find the<br />

word " window'," with the accent on the last syllable<br />

in other ancient ballads " England' " rhymes with<br />

"hand," and we come across words which have retained<br />

their French accent, for instance: "battaile"' and<br />

"damsille'," with the accent on the final syllable.<br />
