3. To what extent do the risk/need levels <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> program participants affect their resp<strong>on</strong>se<br />
(in terms <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> re<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>fending and violati<strong>on</strong>s) to changes in supervisi<strong>on</strong> intensity?<br />
4. Which other program comp<strong>on</strong>ents or <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>fender characteristics moderate the overall<br />
effect <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> supervisi<strong>on</strong> intensity <strong>on</strong> crime?<br />
Systematic Review Methodology<br />
Criteria for inclusi<strong>on</strong> and exclusi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> studies in the review<br />
Types <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Interventi<strong>on</strong>s<br />
Eligible studies will test the effect <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> a change in intensity <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> probati<strong>on</strong><br />
supervisi<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> subsequent crime. A change in intensity could be brought about by<br />
increasing or decreasing the ratio <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> clients to probati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>ficers (changing caseload size);<br />
increasing or decreasing the frequency <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>tact between clients and their <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>ficers; or<br />
increasing or decreasing the frequency <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> other forms <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> supervisory c<strong>on</strong>trol effected by<br />
probati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>ficers, such as drug testing. 4<br />
Studies in which the primary purpose <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the<br />
research design is to estimate the impact <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> these specific measures <strong>on</strong> recidivism and/or<br />
technical violati<strong>on</strong>s are c<strong>on</strong>sidered. Most studies have tested increases in intensity rather<br />
than decreases, but changes in both directi<strong>on</strong>s are eligible for inclusi<strong>on</strong> in the review.<br />
We impose a number <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> restricti<strong>on</strong>s <strong>on</strong> program type in order to preserve<br />
comparability between what we already know will be a highly diverse set <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> studies.<br />
Some programs have examined the provisi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> supervisi<strong>on</strong> as part <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> a ‘team’ approach;<br />
for example, multi-agency collaborati<strong>on</strong> between probati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>ficers, police <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>ficers, and<br />
