4.3.2 Post-Crisis Impact: Comparing the latest employment figures (April 2010) to<br />

the last time growth was recorded in employment (October 2008) (see Figure 2) it is seen<br />

that a cumulative 86,600 jobs were lost (Table C2). This reflects declines mainly in:<br />

I. Wholesale & Retail, Repair <strong>of</strong> Motor Vehicle, Cycle, Personal & Household<br />

Goods which stemmed from the decline in purchasing power<br />

II. Construction & Installation associated with the completion <strong>of</strong> significant<br />

construction projects in an earlier period and decline in purchasing power<br />

over the period<br />

III. Transport, Storage & Communication which was highly impacted by the<br />

fall-out in the Mining & Quarrying industry due to the closure <strong>of</strong> alumina<br />

plants. Also a gloomy economic environment both internationally and<br />

locally led to reduced air traffic which had an impact on persons in that subindustry.<br />
