(8) When waste is being added continuously for several hours at a time from a gas<br />

chromatograph or similar piece of equipment, the container shall have a means to close the<br />

container while allowing a small opening for tubing (e.g., tightly fitting stopper with small hole<br />

for the tubing);<br />

(9) Chemically contaminated waste may not be moved from one satellite accumulation area to<br />

another satellite accumulation area;<br />

(10) Chemically contaminated waste may be temporarily collected in small containers in order<br />

to transport them to a satellite accumulation area;<br />

(11) Temporary containers shall be emptied no later than the end of each shift;<br />

(12) Temporary containers shall only be used if there is no reasonable alternative;<br />

(13) Chemicals which have expired or are no longer usable shall be turned in for disposal<br />

immediately. Legally, these items become waste when they are discarded or no longer usable.<br />

(14) When discarding chemicals that are extremely hazardous, toxic, shock sensitive<br />

(explosive), or highly reactive, lab personnel shall fax or email the list of chemicals to be<br />

discarded to the Environmental Support Services Contractor before requesting a waste pickup,<br />

in accordance with the requirements in Chapter 3 Section 3.10.2.2.<br />

(15) Instead of normal disposal procedures, unknown chemicals or materials without a Material<br />

Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) shall be managed by the ―high HAZMAT‖ team (subcontracted by<br />

the Environmental Support Services Contractor) for emergency response support activities.<br />

13.2.3 Medical Waste or Radioactive Waste<br />

Labs which generate medical waste or radioactive waste shall comply with the requirement for<br />

those programs. Refer to <strong>JPR</strong> 1700.1 Chapter 7 for specific requirements.<br />

13.2.4 Chemically Contaminated<br />

Wastes which are chemically contaminated as well as radioactive or bio-hazardous shall follow<br />

the regulations for both hazards. Contact the EO for guidance.<br />

13.3 Managing Wastewater<br />

a. Laboratories shall comply with all the requirements for wastewater management Chapter 8,<br />

Managing Sanitary Sewer Discharges and the following requirements:<br />

(1) Waste shall be managed in accordance with Chapter 3, Managing Industrial Solid Waste<br />

requirements;<br />

(2) No chemicals shall be poured down sink drains, even small, dilute quantities;<br />

(3) Concentrated caustic or acidic wastes shall not be discharged to the sewer even if the line<br />

flows to a limestone neutralization pit;<br />
