Chapter 15.0 Sustainability
15.1 Scope
This chapter focuses on how JSC uses sustainability to improve its processes, reduce waste,
and enhance more sustainable practices overall. JSC practices sustainability through waste
prevention, waste minimization, waste disposal, sustainable acquisition, beneficial
landscaping, energy and water conservation and green building design and construction.
15.2 Background
Executive Orders 13423 and 13514 state sustainability and sustainable mean ―to create and
maintain conditions, under which humans and nature can exist in productive harmony, that
permit fulfilling the social, economic, and other requirements of present and future
generations.‖ The Sustainability Program at JSC encompasses EMS, energy and water
conservation, material substitution, sustainable acquisition, and process improvements.
15.3 Regulated Processes
NASA defines sustainability as ―Performing our mission today in ways that preserves,
enhance, and strengthen our ability to perform our mission indefinitely‖. JSC’s environmental
policy states that it will conduct its mission in a way that reduces or eliminates harmful impacts
to land, air, water, and other natural resources.
15.3.1 Additional Processes
a. In addition to those processes listed in Chapter 9, Pollution Prevention, 9.3, there are
additional processes that shall be considered in day to day activities, such as:
(1) Preferring recycled and biobased content items designated by the EPA or USDA. The overall
objective of Sustainable Acquisition is to close the loop by providing a market for those
manufactured items containing recycled or biobased content. See Chapter 11, Sustainable
Acquisition for specific requirements.
(2) Using beneficial landscaping to use plants that require minimal maintenance through watering,
fertilizing, trimming, and pesticide applications. Plants that are considered beneficial to the
environment are often native or indigenous species that are well adapted to local climate and soil
types.
(3) Striving to expand the use of renewable energy and water conservation within JSC operations
by implementing renewable energy projects and by purchasing electricity from renewable energy
sources whenever possible. These initiatives help keep rivers, lakes and wilderness areas clean,
and ensure a diverse wildlife population, healthy soil, and clean air. JSC has an Energy and Water
Conservation Plan that implements Executive Orders 13423, Strengthening Federal Environmental,
Energy, and Transportation Management and 13514, Federal Leadership in Environmental,
Energy, and Economic Performance.
