a. Generators shall adhere to the following requirements for the accumulation of laboratory
wastes:
(1) Do not store ISW in glass containers unless it is the only compatible material.
(2) Do not store ISW in laboratory vent hoods unless there is no safe alternative; hoods can be
used for the transfer of wastes or chemicals to containers and for temporary observations of
waste transfers to confirm that no vapors or heat are generated and that the waste can be
safely sealed for storage.
(3) Move the container to the hood to add wastes when depositing wastes into accumulation
containers.
(4) Do not immediately close the container after adding wastes. Allow a few minutes to ensure
that no reactions will occur that could cause fumes or gas to be generated.
(5) Once you are sure that no gases will be generated, close the container tightly, and move it
to its proper storage location.
(6) Maintain a detailed log of all waste added to an accumulation container.
(7) Mix only the minimum amount of chemicals that are needed to do the job in order to
minimize the amount of waste accumulated and disposed of after you are done with your
activities.
(8) Store/accumulate wastes for no more than 3 months.
(9) Do not mix waste that contains any concentration of nitric acid with any other wastes. Nitric
acid is extremely reactive, is both an oxidizer and a corrosive, and will generate heat and
gases when mixed with organics and other similar materials.
(10) Develop and maintain a chemical hygiene plan for all laboratories. Meet the following
requirements during the review process:
(a) Have the review completed by a qualified (degreed) chemist whenever new or revised
laboratory procedures or processes (procedural or chemical changes) are planned;
(b) Include waste disposal and accumulation activities in the review to see if waste collection
and accumulation procedures changed; and
(c) Conduct the review before the new procedure or process is initiated.
3.9.3 Roll-off Storage Areas
a. When accumulating ISW in rolloffs, generators shall:
(1) Maintain the roll-off in good condition; report any damage to the EO.
(2) Keep the roll-off container closed except when adding or removing ISW.
