(e.g., the words ―used oil,‖ ―waste aerosols,‖ ―used oil rags,‖ etc.). Paint markers rather than
paper labels are preferred;
c. Do not use ―Hazardous Waste‖ labels;
d. Place the container so the label faces out and can be seen without having to turn the
container;
e. Check labels periodically, and provide new labels if illegible;
f. For waste drums in Satellite Accumulation Areas (SAAs), write the full date that the 55-gallon
maximum capacity of waste is reached on the top and sides of the drum. For smaller waste
containers (5 gallons or less) in laboratory SAAs, write the date the waste is first placed in the
container; and
g. Follow any additional requirements identified in this section for labeling universal waste,
asbestos, lead, polychlorinated biphenyls, unknown wastes, gas cylinders, and used oil.
3.6.2 Labeling Bulk Roll-off Containers
a. At delivery, the EO shall attach labels to two opposing sides of the roll-off containers to allow
clear visibility during accumulation and transport.
b. The ISW generator shall mark the start date (the date that waste is first placed in the roll-off
container) on the waste labels.
3.6.3 Labeling Other Miscellaneous Accumulation Devices
ISW generators shall follow the EO’s directions for labeling requirements, which will be
determined on a case-by-case basis for miscellaneous accumulation devices.
3.6.4 Labeling Universal Waste
a. Generators of Universal Waste (i.e. consisting of nickel batteries, nickel-cadmium batteries,
lithium batteries, fluorescent lamps, high-intensity discharge lamps, mercury-containing articles
and equipment, paint and paint related waste) shall comply with the following labeling
requirements:
(1) For single nickel cadmium and lithium batteries, clearly and legibly mark each battery with
the words ―universal waste - battery‖ and the date the battery was taken out of service. If
storing batteries in a container, be sure to clearly and legibly label the outside of the container
also with the words ―universal waste- battery‖ and the date the first battery is placed in the
container. There are no labeling requirements for spent lead acid batteries.
(2) For single lamps, clearly and legibly label the lamp with the words ―universal waste - lamp‖
and the date the lamp was removed from service. For fluorescent lamps and high-intensity
