Chapter 14.0
Supplemental Waste Accumulation and Segregation Guide
14.1 Scope
a. Although it is impossible to provide segregation specifics for every possible waste that is
generated, this document provides guidance to individuals generating wastes on storage decisions
and mixing waste chemicals. Laboratories pose a complicated problem when small quantities of
chemical mixtures are poured into a single container. Therefore, this guide will also provide specific
information for storing laboratory wastes.
b. Remember, this guide provides additional information on storing and segregating wastes, but all
the requirements in Chapter 3, Managing Industrial Solid Waste, also apply. Not all requirements
are restated in this quick overview supplement.
14.2 General Waste Accumulation Guidance
14.2.1 Proper Waste Accumulation Process
a. An evaluation on the proper waste accumulation process shall be done prior to using any
chemical.
b. The Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) and product labels are two primary sources of
information on how to handle the waste generated from using the product. The evaluation shall
consider all the following:
(1) Segregation issues: What other wastes, if any, can be mixed or stored together?
(2) Waste accumulation container type: What type of container should be used (plastic, glass,
special)?
(3) Waste container size: What size of container should be used to accumulate wastes?
(4) Waste accumulation location: Where should the waste be stored?
(5) Accumulation time: How long is it safe to store or accumulate the waste before requesting
pickup for ultimate disposition?
(6) Accumulation area inspection: What are the requirements for inspecting the waste
accumulation area?
(7) Special requirements for laboratories: Are there additional requirements for laboratories
that use multiple chemicals and generate waste mixtures?
14.2.2 Waste Segregation and Compatibility
a. If a product has a particular hazard or incompatibility with another chemical, the waste will
usually exhibit the same characteristics. Generally, it is not recommended to mix any two
wastes. Some of the results of unknowingly (or knowingly) mixing wastes that shouldn't be
mixed are:
