requirements. In many cases, a hazardous waste permit is required for waste treatment.<br />
Obtaining a permit is time consuming and costly.<br />
(d) Organizations shall evaluate the treatability of wastes generated from equipment and<br />
processes during the selection process. Include this information in the life cycle cost evaluation<br />
that is conducted during the selection process.<br />
(4) Waste Disposal<br />
(a) Employees shall consider the disposal (i.e., incineration or landfilling) of waste as the last<br />
and least preferred option.<br />
(b) Employees shall make every possible effort to find a better alternative before disposing of a<br />
waste.<br />
(c) All waste disposal methods are evaluated and determined by the EO in order to ensure that<br />
all environmental regulations are complied with, and to reduce NASA's long-term liability. The<br />
EO shall look for recycling and treatment options prior to choosing disposal as the final option.<br />
9.4 Responsibilities<br />
9.4.1 All employees on-site, as applicable to their duties and responsibilities, shall:<br />
a. Utilize hazardous materials only when necessary, and substitute non-hazardous or less<br />
toxic materials for hazardous materials whenever feasible;<br />
b. Purchase and store the minimum amount of hazardous materials required to accomplish the<br />
job or task;<br />
c. Implement emission, effluent, and personal exposure controls to reduce or eliminate<br />
pollution;<br />
d. Ensure proper training and certifications to handle hazardous materials and industrial solid<br />
wastes are current and up-to-date;<br />
e. Evaluate day-to-day operations and document existing and potential sources of pollution;<br />
f. Identify source reduction and recycling practices that will reduce the amount of any<br />
hazardous and non-hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant entering the environment.<br />
This includes:<br />
(1) Equipment or technology modifications;<br />
(2) Process or procedure modifications;<br />
(3) Re-design of products;<br />
(4) Purchase of recycled or biobased materials over virgin (raw) materials;<br />
(5) Substitution of less toxic or environmentally friendly chemicals; and<br />
