(4) Chemicals shall not be diluted in order to dispose of them via the sewer;<br />

(5) Labs shall be permitted to dispose of some non-hazardous waste such as salt solutions,<br />

sugar solutions, dilute rinsate, and soaps down the drain (unless the waste is also radioactive<br />

or a biohazard); and<br />

(6) Labs shall obtain approval by the EO for wastewater discharges prior to initiating the<br />

discharge. Refer to Chapter 8, Managing Sanitary Sewer Discharges.<br />

13.4 Handling and Reporting Spills and Releases<br />

Refer to Chapter 12, Handling and Reporting Spills and Releases for requirements related to<br />

spills or releases of chemicals or hazardous materials (solids, liquids, or gasses).<br />

13.5 Managing Air Emissions<br />

Refer to Chapter 5, Managing Regulated Air Emissions for requirements related to laboratories<br />

using chemicals.<br />

13.6 Restricted and Prohibited Chemicals<br />

Some chemicals are prohibited for use at JSC. Before ordering chemicals, employees shall<br />

refer to <strong>JPR</strong> 1700.1, Safety and Health Handbook, Chapter 9.1, Prohibited and Restricted<br />

Chemicals to verify those chemicals, or to find out how to request a waiver.<br />

13.7 Responsibilities<br />

Directorate Level Organizations (DLOs) shall be held responsible for ensuring that employees<br />

under their direction are aware of the additional environmental requirements related to<br />

laboratory operations, in addition to the requirements already stated in Chapter 1, Section 1.5<br />

of this document.<br />

13.8 Personnel Training and Certification Requirements<br />

Employees working in laboratories must take training as required within each of the previous<br />

chapters.<br />

13.9 Records and Forms<br />

The waste addition record is maintained by laboratory personnel for a period of at least one<br />

year.<br />
