Chapter 4.0 Recycling and Managing Other Solid Wastes (including Plant Trash)
4.1 Scope
All wastes generated from JSC, EF, SCTF and EPFOL are considered industrial wastes by the
state of Texas. Wastes are further broken down into hazardous and non-hazardous. Plant
trash is one category of non-hazardous industrial waste.
4.1.1 Waste Definition
Plant trash is produced as a result of plant production, manufacturing, laboratory, general
office, cafeteria or food service operations. See Section 4.3.1 for a detailed list.
4.1.2 JSC Recycling Commitment
JSC has committed to diverting 50% of our solid waste from landfills by 2015 through
recycling. JSC recycles paper products, aluminum cans, plastic bottles, batteries, ink
cartridges, scrap metal and construction and demolition wastes. See Section 4.3.2 for
information on recycling programs.
4.1.3 Recycling Hierarchy
a. JSC uses the common hierarchy for disposing of unwanted materials: reduce, reuse, and
recycle. The preferred method for reducing solid waste is source reduction. For any questions
regarding recycling, contact the EO.
(1) All site-wide employees, civil servants and contractors at JSC, EF, SCTF and EPFOL shall:
(a) Dispose of wastes in accordance with the proper regulatory process. If you manage
hazardous wastes or wastes listed in Table 1, see Chapter 3, Managing Industrial Solid Waste.
(b) Comply with this Chapter.
4.2 Regulated Processes
4.2.1 All employees shall:
a. Make every effort to reduce material use in the performance of their job.
b. Manage all waste, which is contaminated or contain chemicals or toxic materials, in accordance
with Chapter 3, Managing Industrial Solid Waste;
c. Use the Redistribution and Utilization (R&U) system for reusable items;
d. Recycle items via JSC’s Recycling Programs;
e. Dispose only of those items legally defined as ―plant trash‖ in trash receptacles, dumpsters and
roll-offs (see Section 4.3.1).
4.2.2 Prohibited Dumping
