(1) Generation of fumes, excess heat, volatility, or even explosion;
(2) Reactions that form unknown chemicals, which may have different hazards or change the
hazard level of the waste. Sampling and analysis of unknowns are expensive to analyze prior
to disposal;
(3) Formation of a corrosive product that may result in incompatibility with the container and
possibly cause the container to degrade and leak;
14.2.3 Mixing Wastes
14.2.3.1 Rules
a. When mixing similar wastes, the following general compatibility rules shall be followed:
(1) Separate highly toxic and less toxic wastes;
(2) Separate halogenated and non-halogenated wastes (halogens are materials containing
bromine, chlorine, fluorine, iodine, or astatine);
(3) Separate liquids and solids;
(4) Separate metal containing wastes from non-metal containing wastes (metals of specific
concern are arsenic, barium, chromium, cadmium, lead, mercury, selenium, or silver);
(5) Separate oils from other wastes; and
(6) Separate waste types (flammables, corrosives, oxidizers, poisons, cyanides and sulfides,
water or air reactives, etc.) from each other.
14.2.3.2 Waste Compatibility List
More specific information can be found in the Waste Compatibility List developed by the U.S.
EPA, provided in Appendix C.
14.2.4 Log Documentation
a. Laboratories shall keep a separate log for each waste accumulation container, and include
the following documentation for each addition:
(1) The date waste was added to the container;
(2) The name of person adding the waste;
(3) The amount of waste added;
(4) A detailed description of the added waste specifying the chemical name (not product name)
and the percentages of each chemical in mixtures; and
(5) A copy of the log accompanying the container when picked up for disposal.
