JSC Environmental Compliance Procedural Requirements JPR No. 8550.1A XXXX.X Effective Date: Johnson Space Center • Environmental Compliance Program Expiration Date: Expiration Date: Page Number 3/25/2011 3/25/2016 [Leave Blank] Page 9 of 123 Chapter 1.0 Overview 1.1 Scope Environmental compliance relates to activities that have the potential to impact or alter the environment, including changes of an ecological, biological, geological, physical or chemical nature. Johnson Space Center (JSC) commits to conducting our mission in a manner that promotes environmental stewardship, sustainability, compliance, and continual improvement. Management of the JSC Environmental Compliance Program is primarily the responsibility of the Center Operations Directorate Environmental Office (EO). Compliance requirements are provided within this document. 1.2 Background a. This document defines the requirements established in order to comply with federal and state regulatory requirements, Executive Orders and NASA policy. Anyone working on-site at JSC, Ellington Field (EF), Sonny Carter Training Facility (SCTF) or El Paso Forward Operating Location (EPFOL) is required to comply with these requirements unless alternate requirements have been defined by contract, grant or other binding agreement. The requirements in this document are an element of the JSC Environmental Management System (EMS) operations controls to reduce negative environmental impacts and maintain or enhance positive impacts. b. Throughout this document when the Environmental Office (EO) is mentioned, it means the EO and the environmental support services contractor. When referring to the EO, find the appropriate contact number in the ―who to call‖ list on Environmental Webpage http://www6.jsc.nasa.gov/ja/ja13/index.cfm. 1.3 Relationship to Other Compliance Programs a. Due to the close relationship between environmental, occupational safety, and occupational health issues, some environmental programs are managed in coordination with the health and safety organizations while some are managed almost entirely by those organizations. The following sections describe environmental programs, or parts of environmental programs, that are primarily managed by other JSC organizations. (1) The following program areas are primarily managed by NS/Safety and the Test Operations Division, and the SD3/Clinical Services Branch. Requirements can be found in JPR 1700.1, JSC Safety and Health Handbook or by contacting one of their representatives.
