Background and Demographic Information
The 36 sex workers interviewed for this study represent a diverse set of racial and ethnic backgrounds and
gender identities. As illustrated in figure 8.1, twelve participants identified as African American or black
(33 percent), six identified as white (17 percent), four identified as Latino/a (11 percent), and three
identified as multiracial (8 percent). Eleven (30 percent) did not identify a race or ethnicity. Twenty-eight
individuals (78 percent) identified as women, one (3 percent) identified as a man, and seven (19 percent)
identified as transgender women (figure 8.2). 68
