Background and Demographic Information<br />

The 36 sex workers interviewed for this study represent a diverse set of racial and ethnic backgrounds and<br />

gender identities. As illustrated in figure 8.1, twelve participants identified as African American or black<br />

(33 percent), six identified as white (17 percent), four identified as Latino/a (11 percent), and three<br />

identified as multiracial (8 percent). Eleven (30 percent) did not identify a race or ethnicity. Twenty-eight<br />

individuals (78 percent) identified as women, one (3 percent) identified as a man, and seven (19 percent)<br />

identified as transgender women (figure 8.2). 68<br />
