1.6.3. Guns Economy Rankings
Here we present the data from the previous table, slightly differently, showing the rank ordering of cities
based on the estimated underground commercial gun economy size in 2003 and 2007.
City
Year
Guns
(millions)
Normalized
Dallas 2003 $171 3.6
Atlanta 2003 $169 3.6
DC 2003 $150 3.2
Miami 2003 $106 2.2
Seattle 2003 $83.1 1.8
Denver 2003 $58.4 1.2
San Diego 2003 $46.6 1.0
Dallas 2007 $171 3.6
DC 2007 $160 3.4
Atlanta 2007 $146 3.1
Miami 2007 $118 2.5
Seattle 2007 $60.1 1.3
San Diego 2007 $47.7 1.0
Denver 2007 $47.4 1.0
As before, these numbers do not reflect per capita weapon spending. The results are broadly consistent
with expectations. Dallas and Atlanta lead, being large cities located in states with relatively lax gun laws.
While it is initially surprising to see such large activity in Washington, DC (which has particularly
stringent gun laws), less than 15 percent of the population of the DC metropolitan area actually lives in the
District itself. Finally, it is worth noting that almost all cities witnessed a small decline in the cash-based
weapons market between 2003 and 2007.
1.7. Solution Quality and Robustness
Solution Quality
The solution obtained was presented in section 1.6. Solution of the Linear Program. The quality of this
solution may be evaluated by noting that the values of the objective function at the solution point is
implying that on average, each of the 14 equalities experienced a 5.76 percent imbalance. Equivalently, in
the solution presented in section 0, on average, in each of the 14 LoCC equations, the sum of the righthand
side variables is
