SCHIZO-CULTURE IN NEW YORK
improvised address to the Schizo-Culture Conference organized by Semiotext(e) in
November, 1975 at Columbia University in New York. Not yet published in
French. The Schizo-Culture Conference was the first encounter in the United States
between post-'68 French theorists (Michel Foucault, Felix Guattari, Gilles Deleuze,
Jean-Francois Lyotard), R.D. Laing, the New Yo rk art world (John Cage, William
Burroughs, Richard Foreman) and the "radical" academic constituency (Ti-Grace
Atkinson, Joel Kove!, etc.). Guattari's address was cut short by followers of Atkinson,
who spoke right after him on the podium, and Foucault was accused publicly
by agents provocateurs of being paid by the CIA. For two days about two thousand
people attended the various workshops, lectures, discussions on psychiatry, madness,
political repression, etc.
