from the tree. This the chief eventually ordered<br />

to be done ; and Campbell managed to dravf him<br />

away some distance from his men, and then<br />

plac<strong>in</strong>g his hand upon him told him through<br />

the <strong>in</strong>terpreter that he would shoot him<br />

(hold<strong>in</strong>g a pistol to his face which he had<br />

concealed <strong>in</strong> his pocket), if he did not walk<br />

with him down to the boat, or if any one of<br />

his men came near to help him. This was<br />

effectual, and between Campbell and Reed the<br />

In consequence of this <strong>in</strong>sult the boats of<br />

the "Castor," "Orestes," and "Dart" (the<br />

frigate's tender), were manned and armed, and<br />

sent up to the village to attack and burn it<br />

they found the village deserted, but, as a<br />

lesson to the natives <strong>in</strong> future, set fire to every
