turn his attention. At the foot of this valley<br />

was a rivulet, then almost dry, and opposite<br />

was a wooded slope which would have adorned<br />

the f<strong>in</strong>est park <strong>in</strong> our own country. On our<br />

right at the head of the valley <strong>in</strong> the distance<br />

were a few, perhaps a dozen, mud and straw<br />

huts, resembl<strong>in</strong>g somewhat <strong>in</strong> size, form, and<br />

colour haystacks <strong>in</strong> a farmyard. We had not<br />

yet seen anyth<strong>in</strong>g to shoot, so we made our<br />

way to the village <strong>in</strong> order to ascerta<strong>in</strong>, if<br />

possible, from the natives the best direction for<br />

US to take for our purpose ; as we approached<br />

the huts, two women made their appearance<br />

and were walk<strong>in</strong>g towards what appeared to be<br />

a well, but on see<strong>in</strong>g us they ran back aga<strong>in</strong><br />

and gave the alarm of om^ approach ; when we<br />

had arrived at the village not a soul was to be<br />

seen at first, and the doors of the huts were all<br />

closed, but as soon as we could make them<br />

understand that we were friends and not foes,<br />

an old man came out, and after expla<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g to
