At the foot of this valley was a rivulet, then almost dry, and opposite was a wooded slope which would have adorned the finest park in our own country. On our right at the head of the valley in the distance were a few, perhaps a dozen, mud and straw huts, resembling somewhat in size, form, and colour haystacks in a farmyard. We had not yet seen anything to shoot, so we made our way to the village in order to ascertain, if possible, from the natives the best direction for US to take for our purpose ; as we approached the huts, two women made their appearance and were walking towards what appeared to be a well, but on seeing us they ran back again and gave the alarm of om^ approach ; when we had arrived at the village not a soul was to be seen at first, and the doors of the huts were all closed, but as soon as we could make them understand that we were friends and not foes, an old man came out, and after explaining to

Having taken a thorough survey of us and of all our clothes, as well as our guns, which gave rise to a vast number of opinions and gestures amongst themselves, they became sufficiently assured to feel the materials of which our clothes were made, a process we did not encourage, as their hands did not promise to improve our garments, and from the force of imagination made one feel uncomfortable. We saw but few natives, and possibly a couple of dozen or so formed the entire population of the village ; the men may have been at work somewhere else, for we only saw two or three in the place.
