CRUISE OF THE " CASTOR S " BOATS. 51
a foir representation of the usual life on the
coast.
We were about to have a very different experience
now for upwards of two months more.
The rainy season was shortly coming on and we
had no camp on shore to retreat to, though owing
to the weather, we needed it more than when
to the southward—but we never once slept out
of the boats. Our ship was still at the Cape,
though she had been expected for
some time,
and we had received no fresh orders in reference
to the boats' proceedings.
Campbell had
been ordered away in charge of a Spanish prize
captured by the "Pantaloon," with, I think, four
hundred slaves in her, and called by the misplaced
name of " The Philanthropy."
Our pinnace was now under the command
of Mr. Jones, second master of the "Dee,"
whose cheery disposition and good temper
made him well suited to take the place of
Campbell, who, with a similarly cheerful
spirit,
had succeeded in rendering every one happy in
the boats, and in making the service a most
agreeable one.
