that the Portuguese on the river Zambezi sold
off nearly all the slaves they had on their farms
to supply it, and therefore during the latter
part of the time that I was in the country they
were getting fresh slaves down for the cultivation
of their farms ; and the whole of the
country in which we were was depopulated for
their trade."
986. " That was not for export ?"— " Not for
export at that time, but if the opportunity offered
they would have exported those slaves."
937. " If they could have got for them such a
price as would have compensated them for the
loss of their labour on

from the part of the country we were in find
their way to Mozambique, and that many of
them find their way to Zanzibar. Dr. Livingstone
recognized slaves at Zanzibar that had
been brought from that part of the country, and
I have recognized at Mozambique some who had
