Another intelligent tribe, though not to be compared to the Gallas, was the Maheows. Two of their women were called respectively "Betsy Jane" and "the Elephant," this last designation arising from the size of the person to whom it was given. There was not a man or woman in the ship to be compared to this huge monster. Whilst there was not much distinction between the intermediate tribes, we must not forget to mention " the Monginda." Anything more repulsive than some of the females of this tribe it is impossible to conceive, for, unlike the men belonging to it, they are tattooed all over and have large holes in the upper lips, nose, and ears—holes made when they were born, and which the rings and ornaments suspended from them had enlarged to an enormous size ; in the holes bored in the lobes of their ears they wear circular pieces of wood.
