Bead (population 50,000), the residence of the<br />

Amir, where equally the population is partly<br />

mixed with Persian. In this town there are<br />

female Circassian slaves, also several white men<br />

as slaves, and but few negroes or Nubians.<br />

other towns of Nedsch, s<strong>in</strong>gle slaves are to be<br />

found here and there, but none at all among<br />

the Bedou<strong>in</strong> Arabs, who number 200,000. <strong>The</strong><br />

former capital, Deraya, was partially destroyed<br />

by order of Ibrahim Pasha (adopted son of<br />

Mahommed Ali), and now numbers but few<br />

<strong>in</strong>habitants.<br />

" In Asia, where I travelled by bye-roads and<br />

saw no actual towns, the Arabians carry on<br />

farm<strong>in</strong>g and cattle-breed<strong>in</strong>g, employ<strong>in</strong>g their<br />
