known a sorrow or anticipated a care, others,<br />

more experienced, were silent and sorrowful<br />

some were joyous and some sad, and some were<br />

one wHen tliey sliould have been the other.<br />

Interest<strong>in</strong>g as it was to us all, this one day was<br />

quite enough to impress the scene on the<br />

m<strong>in</strong>d <strong>in</strong>delibly.<br />

<strong>The</strong> next day, Sunday, 27th, the rema<strong>in</strong>der of<br />

our party arrived. We then embarked <strong>in</strong> the<br />

" Carnatic," which sailed early 'the next<br />

morn<strong>in</strong>g for Aden and Bombay.<br />

I shall briefly allude to the<br />

rema<strong>in</strong>der of the<br />

passage by quot<strong>in</strong>g from my diary. I remember<br />

hear<strong>in</strong>g of a certa<strong>in</strong> elderly lady who<br />

departed this life some fifty years ago, who<br />

kept a journal, <strong>in</strong> which constantly occurred the<br />

alternate entries :<br />

sober." <strong>The</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g entries are much <strong>in</strong> the<br />

same style :<br />

" Monday,—Heat great. <strong>The</strong>rmometer 95°.<br />

Passengers very silent.<br />

" Tuesday.—Heat very great. Passengers<br />

who had come so far as Alexandria <strong>in</strong> the same<br />

steamers sociable.<br />
