Interesting as it was to us all, this one day was quite enough to impress the scene on the mind indelibly. The next day, Sunday, 27th, the remainder of our party arrived. We then embarked in the " Carnatic," which sailed early 'the next morning for Aden and Bombay. I shall briefly allude to the remainder of the passage by quoting from my diary. I remember hearing of a certain elderly lady who departed this life some fifty years ago, who kept a journal, in which constantly occurred the alternate entries : *' Peter drunk ; " " Peter sober." The following entries are much in the same style : " Monday,—Heat great. Thermometer 95°. Passengers very silent. " Tuesday.—Heat very great. Passengers who had come so far as Alexandria in the same steamers sociable. Passengers who had come in

"Passengers via Southampton improved their acquaintance by criticizing passengers via Marseilles. Passengers vicl Marseilles played chess, &c., together, and always looked as if they knew something the other party would like to, but didn't. " Thursday.—Thermometer 98° night and day. Passengers by Southampton steamer laughed and talked together as they had never laughed and talked before the other party joined. The former played croquet on deck, the latter backgammon below. "Friday.—Mr. B , one of the passengers, died of heat apoplexy. There were four other cases of heat apoplexy among the crew, which, however, were not fatal. "Anything hke the heat I have never experienced, although the thermometer is only 95° ; but there is not a breath of air night or day, and the heat is even greater at night, so that there is not a moment's relief.
