Misled by a map call<strong>in</strong>g this river <strong>in</strong> an ofFliand<br />

manner " Zambesi, eastern branch," I took it<br />

to be the southern river of that name ; but the<br />

Chambeze, with all its branches, flows from the<br />

eastern side <strong>in</strong>to the centre<br />

of the great upland<br />

valley mentioned, which is probably the valley<br />

of the Nile. It is an <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g river, as help<strong>in</strong>g<br />

to form three lakes, and chang<strong>in</strong>g its<br />

name<br />

three times <strong>in</strong> the 500 or 600 miles of its course.<br />

It was first crossed by the Portuguese, who<br />

always <strong>in</strong>quired for ivory and slaves, and heard<br />

of noth<strong>in</strong>g else. A person who collected all,<br />

even the hearsay geography of tho Portuguese,<br />

knew so httle actually of the country that he<br />

put a large river here runn<strong>in</strong>g 3000 feet<br />

and called it the New Zambesi.<br />

as large as the Isis at Oxford, but runn<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Zambesi I could always steer the steamer boldly<br />

to where they lay, sure<br />

eight feet of water. <strong>The</strong> Chambeze runs <strong>in</strong>to<br />

Lake Bangweolo, and on com<strong>in</strong>g out of it<br />

assumes the name Luapula.<br />
