their own lives <strong>in</strong> the attempt, so will these<br />

piratical potentates come to any terms that<br />

may be dictated to them with the chance of<br />

los<strong>in</strong>g all before their eyes. <strong>The</strong> Arabs are<br />

crafty, and if the Sultan can get compensation<br />

for any sacrifice he may make he will ; but we<br />

consider that it would be shameful of England<br />

to purchase from him the freedom of the<br />

negroes which is their right, especially when<br />

the purchase-money would consist <strong>in</strong> a permanent<br />

annual payment. If we were purchas<strong>in</strong>g<br />

cattle or the right to preserve game <strong>in</strong> his<br />

territory this would be all very well, but if we<br />

are expected to compensate him, why should<br />

we not equally demand compensation for the<br />

<strong>in</strong>juries done to the negroes and the payment<br />

of the expenses of their ma<strong>in</strong>tenance ?<br />

Recollect<strong>in</strong>g what it has cost us <strong>in</strong> the past<br />

I do not conf<strong>in</strong>e the mean<strong>in</strong>g to a pecuniary<br />

sense—and regard<strong>in</strong>g the difficulties and perplexities<br />

the only conditions for another treaty with the<br />
