begged not to be given up, being in evident
terror at the suggestion ; I therefore retained
thera, and wi^ote a letter to the Grovernor, informing
him that as there were some who wished
to go on shore again, I had landed them.
These, of course, were soon apprehended by the
Portuguese, and had to make the best defence
they could.
The most unmitigated falsehoods were published
in the Portuguese papers (at Goa, I
believe), and also at the Cape of Good Hope,
which must have been conveyed there by the
Portuguese corvette lying in the harbour of
Mozambique at the time, on her way home;
these falsehoods were only cleared up and proved
to be such by a court of inquiry, on the
" Daphne's " return to England in the following
year.
At daybreak, on the 32th September, the
" Star " hove in sight, and signalled my promotion.
