We were at last ushered into a small room, hung round with coloured calico, where, seated at the farther end on a raised cushion or ottoman placed on a dais, was her Majesty the Queen of Mohilla, the only part of her face visible being her eyes, which were particularly good, but might have belonged to the plainest or the handsomest face. Seated in front at her feet, in a semicircle, were about eight female attendants, ladies of the bedchamber, mistress of the robes, &c., of course. On her right sat the prime minister and foreign secretary, on her left the commander-in-chief of " all the forces," and another gentleman who had made his appearance, probably the lord chamberlain. Her Majesty having asked many questions, and expressed her pleasure at seeing an EngUsh ship there, I inquired if she desired to see the ship, which she had asked some questions about, to which she appeared inchned to answer in the affirmative; but at this the prime minister became very irate, and probably threatening to throw up his portfolio if she did, made her decline the invitation. We left the place much in the same way we entered, I taking care, when a reasonable distance from it, to tumble off my extraordinary vehicle and not to get on again. " All the forces " went through some dangerous but interesting evolutions by way of a salute I suppose, but I am not sure of that, and in which, fortunately, they had only one man wounded, after which we proceeded to the boats and left the island. Arriving off Cape St. Andrew's, Madagascar, we fell in with the "Lyra" with our orders for Trincomalee, where we arrived on the 7th October, first having returned to Zanzibar and Seychelles.
