general cargo, and we were enabled to purchase<br />

enough to last us till we got to <strong>Zanzibar</strong>.<br />

Among these poor creatures there wei*e many<br />

seriously ill, and some of them died, though<br />

everyth<strong>in</strong>g was done for them that could be<br />

done by Di'. Mortimer and others. <strong>The</strong>y never<br />

rallied from the exhaustion produced by starvation<br />

on board the dhow. Dysentery was carry<strong>in</strong>g<br />

them ofl', and amongst those ill, some were<br />

suffer<strong>in</strong>g<br />

from ulcers, and these had to be kept<br />

sepai^ate from the mass. But worse than all,<br />

the small-pox broke out just<br />

before we arrived<br />

at <strong>Zanzibar</strong>.<br />

After gett<strong>in</strong>g there we landed the<br />

only case at the time, hop<strong>in</strong>g it would prevent<br />

the spread of the disease, and Mr. Chm*chill,<br />

while on board, be<strong>in</strong>g Judge of the Admiralty<br />

Com't, heard the stor}* of each slave separately,<br />

which facilitated our start<strong>in</strong>g for Seychelles;<br />
