after we left Brava, we had only three days'
provisions for the slaves on board ;
fortunately,
however, we fell in with a dhow that had a
general cargo, and we were enabled to purchase
enough to last us till we got to Zanzibar.
Among these poor creatures there wei*e many
seriously ill, and some of them died, though
everything was done for them that could be
done by Di'. Mortimer and others. They never
rallied from the exhaustion produced by starvation
on board the dhow. Dysentery was carrying
them ofl', and amongst those ill, some were
suffering
from ulcers, and these had to be kept
sepai^ate from the mass. But worse than all,
the small-pox broke out just
before we arrived
at Zanzibar.
After getting there we landed the
only case at the time, hoping it would prevent
the spread of the disease, and Mr. Chm*chill,
while on board, being Judge of the Admiralty
Com't, heard the stor}* of each slave separately,
which facilitated our starting for Seychelles;
