in our minds, we must either have become
apathetic amidst our luxury or have lost the
spirit of enterprise, hitherto so characteristic
of our countrymen, to regard such an undertaking
as that proposed as unfeasible.
With the vastly increasing population of all
other parts of the world, and with young
Englishmen seeking a maintenance in every
foreign clime already well populated, would
it not be possible to create an English Colony in
the healthy, mountainous country in the interior
of Africa, where there would soon be a far
better opening, and a greater certainty of
obtaining a living for those thousands of emigrants
leaving our country only to be disappointed
in
Canada, the United States, and still
more so in the yellow-fever and pestilential
countries of South America ?
