150 DHOW-CHASING. It is but little that these poor creatures can require. It was probably the only village for many miles round, the natives keeping as far as they can from any populous district, and retreating to places which the Arabs do not find it worth while to visit except upon very rare occasions, and where the Portuguese cannot intrude. After assuring the natives in the best way we could that we were neither Arabs nor Portuguese, but English, who never stole negroes, their countenances lightened up, and they showed us that they understood what we meant and appreciated us; they then pointed towards the wood as the best shooting-ground, but we found no game and so returned to the ship. Leaving the Kiswara, we steered for Revooma River, and on approaching it sighted and chased a dhow, which ran into the river and anchored close to some mangrove-trees near the entrance. On our ships anchoring off the river the chase was continued in the boats, and on boarding the dhow it was found she had been
THE CRUISE OF THE "DAPHNE." 151 deserted by the negoda, who had left four slaves on board, and from the filthy state of the vessel inside, there could be no doubt that a cargo of slaves had just been landed; our boats were away all night, and the next morning a similar dhow was chased and captured by Lieutenant Acklom in the cutter, but not till it had been cleared of slaves and deserted. But the most exciting part of our cruise was yet to come.
