It is but little that these poor creatures can<br />

require. It was probably the only village for<br />

many miles round, the natives keep<strong>in</strong>g as far<br />

as they can from any populous district, and<br />

retreat<strong>in</strong>g to places which the Arabs do not<br />

f<strong>in</strong>d it worth while to visit except upon very<br />

rare occasions, and where the Portuguese cannot<br />

<strong>in</strong>trude.<br />

After assur<strong>in</strong>g the natives <strong>in</strong> the best way<br />

we could that we were neither Arabs nor<br />

Portuguese, but English, who never stole<br />

negroes, their countenances lightened up, and<br />

they showed us that they understood what we<br />

meant and appreciated us; they then po<strong>in</strong>ted<br />

towards the wood as the best shoot<strong>in</strong>g-ground,<br />

but we found no game and so returned to the<br />

ship.<br />

Leav<strong>in</strong>g the Kiswara, we steered for Revooma<br />

River, and on approach<strong>in</strong>g it sighted and chased<br />

a dhow, which ran <strong>in</strong>to the river and anchored<br />

close to some mangrove-trees near the entrance.<br />

On our ships anchor<strong>in</strong>g off the river<br />

the chase was cont<strong>in</strong>ued <strong>in</strong> the boats, and on<br />

board<strong>in</strong>g the dhow it was found she had been
