breach <strong>in</strong> the walls of the reservoir, we must<br />

repair the breaches, not only by abolish<strong>in</strong>g<br />

exist<strong>in</strong>g treaties and blockad<strong>in</strong>g the places of<br />

exit, the ports and rivers of embarkation, but<br />

we must also build up the walls and, to some<br />

extent, turn back the stream; and this can<br />

only be done by establish<strong>in</strong>g a bulwark on the<br />

sea-coast, to which all liberated Africans should<br />

be taken, and to which the wealth of the<br />

country would <strong>in</strong>evitably flow, under the<br />

protection and encouragement of the English,<br />

whom the natives, far <strong>in</strong> the <strong>in</strong>terior, even at<br />

Lake Nyassa (see Young's Narrative) have<br />

learnt, to some extent, already to trust from<br />

repute, though they know little about us ; and<br />

who hear<strong>in</strong>g that there were British towns and<br />

stations <strong>in</strong> Africa would have no fear of<br />

approach<strong>in</strong>g them with the produce of the<br />

country, whereas they now live <strong>in</strong> such cont<strong>in</strong>ual<br />

dread of see<strong>in</strong>g a foreigner, especially<br />

if that foreigner be Portuguese (who, though<br />

<strong>in</strong> the country for centuries, has been a greater<br />

curse to it than all the wild beasts it conta<strong>in</strong>s)
