existing treaties and blockading the places of
exit, the ports and rivers of embarkation, but
we must also build up the walls and, to some
extent, turn back the stream; and this can
only be done by establishing a bulwark on the
sea-coast, to which all liberated Africans should
be taken, and to which the wealth of the
country would inevitably flow, under the
protection and encouragement of the English,
whom the natives, far in the interior, even at
Lake Nyassa (see Young's Narrative) have
learnt, to some extent, already to trust from
repute, though they know little about us ; and
who hearing that there were British towns and
stations in Africa would have no fear of
approaching them with the produce of the
country, whereas they now live in such continual
dread of seeing a foreigner, especially
if that foreigner be Portuguese (who, though
in the country for centuries, has been a greater
curse to it than all the wild beasts it contains)
