It may not be out of place here to^ive some<br />

description of the <strong>in</strong>habitants of this part of<br />

Madagascar, situated <strong>in</strong> the south-west of the<br />

island, which is, <strong>in</strong> round numbers, about 700<br />

miles long by 300 broad; St. August<strong>in</strong>e's<br />

Bay is about 250 miles from the capital. It<br />

can hardly be said that it is under the laws or<br />

government of the k<strong>in</strong>g, for the natives of the<br />

villages with<strong>in</strong> a few miles of each other are<br />

cont<strong>in</strong>ually fight<strong>in</strong>g amongst themselves upon<br />

the smallest<br />

provocation, or to obta<strong>in</strong> plunder<br />

and so warhke is this copper-coloured race<br />

that it has been found too dangerous, <strong>in</strong>deed<br />

almost impossible, to make slaves of them.<br />

Intellectually, they are as far superior to the<br />

ord<strong>in</strong>ary African negro as are the Somaulies<br />

or Gallas <strong>in</strong> the north of Africa, neither of
