TN the year 1497, Vasco de Gama, a Portiiguese<br />

commanderj witli three ships under<br />

his orders, rounded the Cape of Good Hope,<br />

and a few days afterwards anchored off the<br />

Zambesi river, thence he sailed to Mozambique,<br />

and northward along the coast, anchor<strong>in</strong>g off<br />

several parts of it. At all of these places De<br />

Gama found what every one visit<strong>in</strong>g that<br />

coast<br />
