"A very considerable distance to the<br />

southward of it."<br />

926. " Towards Nyassa ?"— " To the south of<br />

Lake Nyassa, with<strong>in</strong> 100 miles of Lake Nyassa, <strong>in</strong><br />

the part of<br />

the country from which slaves were<br />

pr<strong>in</strong>cipally collected to be sent down to the<br />

coast, and also down the river Zambezi <strong>in</strong>to<br />

the Portuguese dom<strong>in</strong>ions."<br />

927. " Were there very large exports of slaves<br />

from that part of the country ?" — " At that time<br />

the exports were very large, perhaps they had<br />

never been so large before <strong>in</strong> that part of Africa.<br />

<strong>The</strong> whole of the country to the north of the<br />

Zambezi was for the first time <strong>in</strong>vaded by slavetraders,<br />

who took advantage of Dr. Liv<strong>in</strong>gstone's<br />

pre\dous explorations, us<strong>in</strong>g his good<br />

name and fair fame amongst the natives, and<br />

say<strong>in</strong>g that they were the same sort of white<br />

people that they had previously seen; and <strong>in</strong><br />

that way the natives allowed them to come <strong>in</strong>to<br />

their country.<br />

Before that time no Portuguese<br />

had ever been <strong>in</strong>to that part of the country. I<br />

may state that the slave-trade that was opened<br />

out there was of two descriptions. In the first<br />

place, the<br />

Kaffir tribes to the south of the river<br />

Zambezi had been fiu-ht<strong>in</strong>o- for a «:reat number
