was probably ow<strong>in</strong>g to a strict compliance with<br />

the three rules conta<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> the orders received<br />

by Campbell—namely, never to rema<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> the<br />

rivers at night or sleep<br />

on shore on the ma<strong>in</strong>land<br />

; never to allow the men to sleep without<br />

be<strong>in</strong>g under the ra<strong>in</strong>-awn<strong>in</strong>g, with their blanket,<br />

frocks, and trousers on ; and last, though not<br />

least^ to <strong>in</strong>sist upon the extra allowance of<br />

spirits, which was to be served daily <strong>in</strong> the<br />

boats, hav<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> it a due proportion of qu<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>e,<br />

or bark, which <strong>in</strong>deed was the condition of<br />

their receiv<strong>in</strong>g it at all.<br />

But we had now been<br />

two mouths away <strong>in</strong> the boats, and bodies of<br />

men under a govern<strong>in</strong>g head are very often<br />

hke children, who, reahz<strong>in</strong>g no <strong>in</strong>dividual<br />

leave all the th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g and act<strong>in</strong>g<br />

to their superiors, and become careless of themselves<br />

and sometimes pig-like under restra<strong>in</strong>t.<br />

It was probably some carelessness among the<br />

crew <strong>in</strong> not keep<strong>in</strong>g under the awn<strong>in</strong>gs at night<br />

when they found it oppressively hot <strong>in</strong>side,<br />

and probably the loss of strength, ow<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

the climate and to the discomforts of the boats.
