very good, in spite of mucli to try it, and tliis
was probably owing to a strict compliance with
the three rules contained in the orders received
by Campbell—namely, never to remain in the
rivers at night or sleep
on shore on the mainland
; never to allow the men to sleep without
being under the rain-awning, with their blanket,
frocks, and trousers on ; and last, though not
least^ to insist upon the extra allowance of
spirits, which was to be served daily in the
boats, having in it a due proportion of quinine,
or bark, which indeed was the condition of
their receiving it at all.
But we had now been
two mouths away in the boats, and bodies of
men under a governing head are very often
hke children, who, reahzing no individual
responsibility,
leave all the thinking and acting
to their superiors, and become careless of themselves
and sometimes pig-like under restraint.
It was probably some carelessness among the
crew in not keeping under the awnings at night
when they found it oppressively hot inside,
and probably the loss of strength, owing to
the climate and to the discomforts of the boats.
