During the few days "we were at Mayotte, we
received great kindness from the governor, M.
Hayes, and his amiable wife, with whom we
made a tour of the island, and visited the
Roman Catholic schools and convent, where
there are upwards of a hundred native children
under instruction ; and I may here remark that
there is no Protestant Mission on any of these
islands, although the Jesuits are carrying on a
very extensive work on them as well as in
Mozambique and other places in the vicinity.
Protestants are nowhere to be found on the
coast, excepting at Zanzibar and Mombase, one
solitary place north of it ; these islands would
be admirable
places for mission work, and any
earnest missionary would find there
an extensive
field for his labours, and might become as
useful and as distinguished as that great and
good missionary Mr. Ellis was in Madagascar.
