Dur<strong>in</strong>g the few days "we were at Mayotte, we<br />

received great k<strong>in</strong>dness from the governor, M.<br />

Hayes, and his amiable wife, with whom we<br />

made a tour of the island, and visited the<br />

Roman Catholic schools and convent, where<br />

there are upwards of a hundred native children<br />

under <strong>in</strong>struction ; and I may here remark that<br />

there is no Protestant Mission on any of these<br />

islands, although the Jesuits are carry<strong>in</strong>g on a<br />

very extensive work on them as well as <strong>in</strong><br />

Mozambique and other places <strong>in</strong> the vic<strong>in</strong>ity.<br />

Protestants are nowhere to be found on the<br />

coast, except<strong>in</strong>g at <strong>Zanzibar</strong> and Mombase, one<br />

solitary place north of it ; these islands would<br />

be admirable<br />

places for mission work, and any<br />

earnest missionary would f<strong>in</strong>d there<br />

an extensive<br />

field for his labours, and might become as<br />

useful and as dist<strong>in</strong>guished as that great and<br />

good missionary Mr. Ellis was <strong>in</strong> Madagascar.<br />
