beach by the negoda and some of his crew, and<br />

be<strong>in</strong>g forced <strong>in</strong>to the boat, were taken off to the<br />

dhow, and tliis story the negoda did not deny.<br />

Now, we ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> that even if such a vessel had<br />

been captured ivith<strong>in</strong> the Sultan's waters, he<br />

himself would have been compelled by the treaty<br />

to recognize her condemnation, as he has <strong>in</strong><br />

similar <strong>in</strong>stances on many occasions, for she had<br />

no licence ;<br />

but as she was captured beyond the<br />

limit of any treaty, by no stretch of <strong>in</strong>terpretation<br />

of the <strong>in</strong>structions or orders, however much<br />

desired, could these two kidnapped children (two<br />

out of the many thousands who are thus forcibly<br />

carried to the northern markets) be brought<br />

under the nomenclature of "domestic slaves."<br />

"We therefore deta<strong>in</strong>ed this vessel, and she,<br />

and several others (some of them full, and some<br />

with only a few slaves <strong>in</strong> them), were subsequently<br />

condemned at<br />

<strong>Zanzibar</strong>, and the condemnation<br />

approved by the Sultan. Another<br />

case of this system of kidnapp<strong>in</strong>g, was that of a<br />

woman and two boys who were stolen by the
