Arabic is also spoken. <strong>The</strong> Arabs who recaptured<br />

the territory of <strong>Zanzibar</strong> from the<br />

Portuguese about two hundred years ago, or<br />

rather reasserted claim to it, and drove the<br />

Portuguese out,<br />

adopted necessarily to a great<br />

extent the language of that part of the coast,<br />

Swaheli; and from the extensive monopoly of<br />

the trade far south of this, have transmitted that<br />

language <strong>in</strong>to<br />

nearly every part of East Africa,<br />

except<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the Somauli country and the <strong>in</strong>terior,<br />

where it only exists to a limited degree. And it<br />

has more than probably become an improved<br />

language, ow<strong>in</strong>g to the <strong>in</strong>term<strong>in</strong>gl<strong>in</strong>g of the<br />

Arabic with it. <strong>The</strong> negro slaves on arrival<br />

at Quiloa from the <strong>in</strong>terior are often reta<strong>in</strong>ed<br />

a few months there for the double purpose of<br />

recover<strong>in</strong>g their health, and so mak<strong>in</strong>g them<br />

more saleable, and of teach<strong>in</strong>g them the Swaheli<br />

language, which is not only to some degree<br />

necessary, but <strong>in</strong>creases their value <strong>in</strong> the<br />

<strong>Zanzibar</strong> market. It must not be supposed<br />

that of the eleven tribes on board the "Daphne,"<br />

speak<strong>in</strong>g as many different languages, that we
