The language on the East Coast of Africa, from south of the Zambesi to Formosa Bay, the north extreme of Zanzibar, is chiefly

The Arabs who recaptured the territory of Zanzibar from the Portuguese about two hundred years ago, or rather reasserted claim to it, and drove the Portuguese out, adopted necessarily to a great extent the language of that part of the coast, Swaheli; and from the extensive monopoly of the trade far south of this, have transmitted that language into nearly every part of East Africa, excepting in the Somauli country and the interior, where it only exists to a limited degree. And it has more than probably become an improved language, owing to the intermingling of the Arabic with it. The negro slaves on arrival at Quiloa from the interior are often retained a few months there for the double purpose of recovering their health, and so making them more saleable, and of teaching them the Swaheli language, which is not only to some degree necessary, but increases their value in the Zanzibar market. It must not be supposed that of the eleven tribes on board the "Daphne," speaking as many different languages, that we
