212 DHOW-CHASING. persuaded him to accompany us for change of air, that of Darra Salaam being cool and refreshing, as compared with the low, marshy, fever and dysentery producing isle of Zanzibar, and he returned with us at the end of a week quite another man ; not, however, without the proverbial misfortune of " coming to grief," consequent upon having a Bishop on board, being realized, for as we were entering the harbour at the mouth of the river Kingani we touched upon an unknown patch of coral, but fortunately got off again almost immediately. And as on his coming on board I had, by way of a joke, mentioned my anticipation of some evil in consequence, it added to the circumstance a more ludicrous aspect. The harbour of Darra Salaam is the entrance to the river Kingani, in which large ships can ^ make their way for more than a mile up. It had just become the Sultan's new abode, he having built himself a palace here ; another ^ The "Daphne," 1081 tons, drawing seventeen feet of water, was the largest vessel that had ever entered the river at that time.
THE CEUISE OF THE " DAPHNE." 213 building liad also been erected, a kind of official hotel for foreign consuls, or otliers, on tlieir visits from Zanzibar, and tliere Mr. and Mrs. Kirk took up tlieir abode, the Bishop remaining on board. During the few days we were here Dr. Kirk accompanied me up the river occasionally for the purpose of shooting hippopotami, which abound in every part of the river ; but there is one difficulty in getting possession of these animals, if you kill them in the water, they sink not to rise again perhaps for many hours or even days ; if you only wound them, they dive and eventually escape to some other part of the banks and get away into the country, where the natives often find them. We had many shots at these huge animals, but om^ Snider rifles were of little use against their thick hides, and though we wounded many of them we never captured one. At the end of the week we returned to Zanzibar, and on the following day sailed for the Mozambique harbour, whore we arrived on the 17th July; thence we proceeded to Mafa-
