" bang, bang," from our guns, which <strong>in</strong>creased<br />

the consternation on board her. Sails were<br />

lowered, and voices from terrified men heard<br />

hail<strong>in</strong>g us <strong>in</strong> what appeared to be entreaties for<br />

mercy. This ceased with the fir<strong>in</strong>g, and when<br />

the smoke had cleared slowly away the schooner<br />

had disappeared.<br />

Alarm<strong>in</strong>g apprehensions prevailed for some<br />

time with those who were witnesses of her<br />

proximity ; for she was never heard of for ten<br />

months afterwards, when she was found five<br />

miles above the town <strong>in</strong> Quillimane river,<br />

secured to a tree by a hawser, with no one on<br />

days after this the boats returned, and the<br />

" Castor" proceeded to the Cape, where she<br />

arrived on the 5th February, just sixteen months<br />

after we had left it <strong>in</strong> the boats for the Mozambique.<br />
