force, nnder one " Bonga," had completely
defeated the Portuguese troops on the Zambesi,
the general and thirty-six officers being reported
killed or missing, and the force, which had
only recently been sent out there, nearly
annihilated in the neighbourhood of Quilimane,
which, it was feared, would be taken. Angoxa,
which had been in the possession of the Portuguese
for a few years, revolted, and was
taken by some Arab forces ;
and to add to the
difficulty of the situation, the Governor- General
of Mozambique died
of fever, when engaged in
the above expedition at Quilimane. In short,
the power of the Portuguese, and their only real
stronghold, are now, as they have always been,
practically confined to the island of Mozambique,
their great slave-mart.
