keen feelings of overflowing pity and compassion
for the slaves, tlioiigh not liis hatred
and contempt of the slave-dealer. Those more
vivid feelings are not so engi-af ted even in the
Christian's nature as to bear too severe a test,
and while we find them benumbed by familiarity
with such sickening scenes, those of anger and
hatred, being more innate in us, last longer;
and, for myself, I could never see a slave-dealer
without a strong desire to hang, or at least to
horsewhip him.
