A few days after we had landed them, I<br />

went on shore to see them aga<strong>in</strong>, and found the<br />

<strong>in</strong>terior of the large hut divided off <strong>in</strong>to small<br />

huts or rooms, <strong>in</strong> some of which whole tribes<br />

were located, and <strong>in</strong> other smaller ones, married<br />

couples. Yes, <strong>in</strong>deed, they had taken upon<br />

themselves to make the best they could of a<br />

world that had treated them so badly, and thus<br />

to share their miseries together.<br />

I took a list of these couples, with the names<br />

they had acquired or answered to, and sent it<br />

to Mr. "Ward, Commissioner of the island, who<br />

promised duly to register the same.<br />

was headed by<br />

"Marlborough and Sally."<br />

" Jim and Peggy."<br />

Some four months later, when visit<strong>in</strong>g these<br />

islands, we found that the epidemic had been<br />

fatal to about fifty more of the negroes, after we<br />

had left for Bombay. Our own men had quite<br />

recovered, and there was only one case on<br />

board after we left Seychelles.
