decided to break his convoy <strong>in</strong>to two serials. He led <strong>the</strong> first serial, consist<strong>in</strong>g of vehicles thatcould keep up. First Sergeant Robert Dowdy recovered mired or broken-down vehicles andassembled <strong>the</strong>m <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> second, slower serial to cont<strong>in</strong>ue <strong>the</strong> movement north. 19Capta<strong>in</strong> K<strong>in</strong>g and <strong>the</strong> lead serial arrived <strong>in</strong> LIZARD at 0530 on 22 March. First SergeantDowdy and <strong>the</strong> second group f<strong>in</strong>ally reached LIZARD at 1600. Meanwhile, K<strong>in</strong>g reported hissituation to his Commander, Lieutenant Colonel Joseph Fischetti, and to <strong>the</strong> 3rd FSB, whichconfirmed <strong>the</strong>re would be no changes to <strong>the</strong> route. The 3rd FSB also advised K<strong>in</strong>g that <strong>the</strong>convoy would depart as scheduled at 1400. Ra<strong>the</strong>r than leave at <strong>the</strong> scheduled time, K<strong>in</strong>g optedto wait for Dowdy and <strong>the</strong> trail<strong>in</strong>g vehicles, send<strong>in</strong>g his executive officer on with <strong>the</strong> rema<strong>in</strong>derof <strong>the</strong> company. 20At 1930 on <strong>the</strong> 22nd, K<strong>in</strong>g and Dowdy departed LIZARD with 33 soldiers, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g two(Sergeant George Buggs and Private First Class Edward Anguiano) who were assigned to 3rdFSB. K<strong>in</strong>g had 18 vehicles, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g two that were be<strong>in</strong>g towed. The serial conta<strong>in</strong>ed threeHMMWVs, two of which were tow<strong>in</strong>g trailers, and eight 5-ton tractor-trailers, one of whichwas be<strong>in</strong>g towed. There were also five 5-ton trucks, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g a wrecker tow<strong>in</strong>g a water trailer,two cargo trucks tow<strong>in</strong>g trailers, a fuel truck, and a disabled 5-ton cargo truck. F<strong>in</strong>ally, <strong>the</strong>rewere two 10-ton wreckers, one tow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> broken-down 5-ton shop van and <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r tow<strong>in</strong>g<strong>the</strong> broken-down 5-ton tractor-trailer. 21Figure 84.
