As one man put it, “Therewas not a soldier on CURLEY that did not th<strong>in</strong>k he was go<strong>in</strong>g to die that day.” 89 Accord<strong>in</strong>g toone of <strong>the</strong> embedded reporters present at <strong>the</strong> fight, by <strong>the</strong> time Johnson’s company arrived, <strong>the</strong>medics had armed <strong>the</strong>mselves to defend <strong>the</strong>ir patients; those wounded still able to fire a weaponhad picked up arms; <strong>the</strong> chapla<strong>in</strong> considered pick<strong>in</strong>g up a weapon to help defend <strong>the</strong> wounded.“It was <strong>the</strong> most amaz<strong>in</strong>g th<strong>in</strong>g.
